Sometimes the universe has a messed-up sense of humor.
After years of making the pilgrimage to Malle Mile, this was supposed to be another chapter in a story that started for me back in 2016. My girlfriend and I had just started dating. We packed our bags, crossed the Atlantic, and stumbled into what felt less like a motorcycle event and more like a secret society disguised as a country fair. An old English estate. Rolling fields. Campfires. Vintage motorcycles rattling through the grass. Strangers who somehow became friends by sunrise like you’ve always been part of “the club”.
Ten years later, many of those friendships remain some of the most important in my life and every time I return to Malle, I think about those moments. The motorcycles brought us there, but the people are what made us come back.
This year, I wasn't there. The Canadian wildfires had other plans, grounding my flight out of New York City and leaving me staring sadly at airline notifications instead of wandering the grounds of Grimsthorpe Castle with a pint in hand.
Heartbreaking? Absolutely.
But while I was marinating in a distinctly apocalyptic, toxic-orange haze over my city, my phone refused to let me feel completely left behind. Throughout the weekend there was a steady stream of texts, WhatsApp calls, photos, videos, and selfies from friends scattered across the Malle grounds, many accompanied by some variation of "wish you were here" or "we miss you, mate." Every message was a reminder that one of the best parts of Malle has never been the motorcycles. It's the people. As much as I hated missing the event, those check-ins from friends old and new made my heart smile while I watched the weekend unfold from several thousand miles away.
Trying to explain Malle Mile to someone who's never been is nearly impossible.
It's public, but feels private. It celebrates beautiful (and sometimes very valuable) machinery while simultaneously encouraging people to do profoundly questionable things with it.
As Max described it:
"Malle is a vibe. It has style, it brings community together and doesn't take itself too seriously."
You can spend one moment admiring a perfectly restored vintage MV Agusta, then turn around and watch somebody absolutely blast around the campground on a Honda Melody while a crowd of cheers them on like they've just won the Isle of Man TT.
Malle exists in a universe where sprint racing, moto polo, live music, campfires, custom motorcycles, dog shows, and questionable decisions all somehow coexist in perfect harmony.
For LiveWire, Malle Mile felt like the perfect place to introduce people to the spirit of S4 Honcho. The LiveWire display became exactly what it should be: not a sales floor, but a gathering place.
According to Geoff, one of the biggest wins wasn't any single conversation about products. It was simply becoming:
“A great hangout spot to sit and talk to people.”
That's Malle. The best interactions rarely happen because someone walked up looking for information. They happen because somebody sits down next to you, starts talking about motorcycles, and thirty minutes later you're discussing camping trips, desert races, terrible life decisions, and whether you really need another motorcycle (the answer is always yes.)
The response to S4 Honcho was overwhelmingly positive. People got it.
Maybe because Malle Mile attracts the exact sort of rider who understands that motorcycles aren't just transportation. They're tools for adventure, self-expression, and occasionally getting gloriously lost.
No Malle recap would be complete without mentioning at least a few moments that sound entirely made up.
There was apparently a T-Rex at the afterparty.
Someone spent time riding in a fast, pointy Maserati at a motorcycle event.
And if multiple attendees are to be believed, missing the dog show was a catastrophic life error. These details sound ridiculous because they are ridiculous. That's precisely why Malle works. Motorcycles should be fun and Malle never forgets that.
So yes, I was heartbroken to miss Malle Mile this year. But hearing the stories reminded me why I fell in love with this strange little event a decade ago. Malle Mile isn't really about racing.
Or motorcycles.
Or custom bikes.
Or campgrounds.
Or castles.
It's about people.
It's about the old friends you hoped would be there.
The new friends you didn't know you needed.
The conversations that start over a motorcycle and somehow end years later.
And that's why, even from thousands of miles away, Malle Mile still felt a little like home.
See you next year. I'll be the one standing around the fire, raising a pint to old friends, new adventures, and whatever wonderfully sketchy idea the Malle crew dreams up next. After all, as this year's team succinctly described the entire experience:
Freestyle. Sketchy. Good times.
